UK's Favourite Emojis Revealed: Tears of Joy Tops 2023 List

An expert has unveiled the top 10 most-used emojis of 2023, with the 'tears of joy' face taking the top spot for the second consecutive year. Keith Broni, editor-in-chief of Emojipedia, says the list reflects a national effort to stay positive.

The top three most-used emojis are crying with laughter, rolling on the floor laughing, and the red heart. Other popular choices include heart eyes at number six and smiling face with hearts at number ten.

Among the new emojis introduced in 2023, the pink heart, shaking face, blue heart, and grey heart have proven most popular. Broni notes that despite emojis first appearing in 2008, their popularity continues to grow, countering suggestions that Gen Z are less keen than older Brits.

Broni attributes the positive mix to people spending time with friends and family. 'The top 10 indicates that people are continuing to express positivity among their friends and family,' he said. He predicts that 'crying with laughter' will remain number one in 2024.

Broni dismissed concerns about emojis dying out, stating: 'They're an incredibly powerful communication tool that people use to better express themselves.'
