A new interactive map has revealed that Glasgow is the UK's biggest hotspot for UFO sightings, with 22 encounters recorded in the city over the past two and a half years. The map, created by The Mirror using data from UFO spotter website UFO Identified, shows a total of 957 sightings across the UK between January 2021 and May 2023.
Edinburgh also emerged as a significant hotspot with 14 sightings, while Aberdeen recorded three, including a 'bright ball of light' that was 'stationary before starting to dance'. The data covers 410 sightings in 2021, 494 in 2022, and 53 up to May 20 this year.
According to the map, 48 per cent of all documented sightings include photographic or video evidence. A quarter were described as 'star-like' objects, with other common sightings including 'orbs', 'spheres', and 'cylinders'. Ash Ellis of UFO Identified noted that countless more sightings go unreported due to fear of ridicule.
The news comes amid renewed interest in UFOs following claims by US Major David Grusch that the US government runs a secret UFO recovery program and possesses 'non-human' spacecraft. However, the Ministry of Defence stated it ceased investigating UFO reports in 2009, as none over 50 years had indicated any military threat to the UK.
