UK to See First 'Blood Moon' Lunar Eclipse Since 2022 Tonight

A total lunar eclipse, known as a 'blood moon', will be visible from the UK tonight (7 September). It is the first such event visible from the UK since 2022.

The eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that turns the Moon a deep red. This effect is caused by sunlight scattering through Earth's atmosphere.

The partial eclipse begins at 4:28 PM UK time, with totality starting an hour later. However, the Moon will not rise until around 7:30 PM, meaning UK viewers will only see the second half of the eclipse.

For the best view, find a high point with a clear eastern horizon. The Moon will appear low in the sky. No special equipment is needed—just look up at the right time.

The next lunar eclipse visible from the UK will be on 28 August 2026, but it will be a partial eclipse, not total.
