FCDO Warns UK Tourists of Extreme Heat and Wildfire Risk in France

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for France, warning of extreme temperatures and associated risks. France recorded its hottest June day on Monday, with temperatures reaching 43.3 degrees Celsius (109.9 Fahrenheit) in Chateaumeillant. Monday night saw a minimum average of 21.6C. At least half of the country remains on red alert.

Drowning and Wildfire Risks

Since the heatwave began, 40 people have drowned while attempting to cool down. The FCDO advises checking weather forecasts and using the Meteo France website for protection tips. Wildfires can start anywhere in France during summer, especially along the Mediterranean coast and in Corsica. The French weather service has launched a fire alert map. Fires have become more frequent due to drought and high temperatures. French authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety. Causing a wildfire is illegal, even accidentally, and can result in fines or prison sentences.

Safety Advice for Travellers

For those in high-risk areas, the French government provides advice in English on what to do if a wildfire breaks out, how to prevent outbreaks, and protecting homes (including mandatory bush clearance). In case of a wildfire, call emergency services on 18 (fire) or 112 (emergency services).

Swimming Warnings

The FCDO warns that local sea conditions can be dangerous even for strong swimmers. Most beaches have lifeguards and flag warning systems. Travelers should understand the system before swimming and follow advice closely. The Royal Life Saving Society offers water safety guidance. Some beaches, particularly along the Atlantic coast, have strong undercurrents and riptides (‘baïnes’) around Gironde and Landes. Jellyfish may also be present.
