Fresh weather maps from WXCharts indicate that parts of the UK could be hit by snowfall in May, with a 24-hour blizzard potentially reaching as far south as Leicester. The wintry conditions are forecast to arrive over Scotland and northern England from approximately 6pm on Sunday, May 10, persisting until roughly 6pm on Monday, May 11.
The heaviest snowfall is expected across central and eastern Scotland, around Glasgow and Aberdeen, with scattered flurries in Manchester, Cumbria, and Leicester. Intermittent rainfall is also predicted across much of the UK on Sunday evening, including near London in the southeast.
Temperatures are set to plunge following a warm spell that saw highs of up to 25°C last week. In Scotland, temperatures could drop to as low as -8°C, while northern England may see just below freezing conditions. The Met Office's long-range forecast for May 10 to May 19 warns of "heavy and locally thundery" rain showers across parts of England and Wales.
The national forecaster states that next week will likely bring "widely unsettled conditions" with temperatures "near or below average, especially in the north, with an ongoing risk of overnight rural frost." Despite this, recent temperatures have been above average, with the Met Office recording a high of 17.6°C at Heathrow Airport on Thursday.
