Two of the biggest names in global television production are reportedly on the verge of a colossal merger that would reshape the industry. Paris-based Banijay Group, the world's largest independent TV producer, is in advanced talks to merge with UK-based All3Media, the company behind award-winning shows like The Traitors and Peaky Blinders.
The Deal That Would Create a European Behemoth
The potential merger, first reported by Reuters, would unite a vast portfolio of hit programmes under one roof. Banijay's extensive catalogue, which includes global formats like MasterChef, Survivor, and Big Brother, would combine with All3Media's beloved British staples such as Midsomer Murders, Call the Midwife, and Race Across the World.
All3Media is currently owned by RedBird IMI, the Abu Dhabi-backed investment vehicle that is also involved in the attempted sale of the Telegraph titles. According to sources, a deal is expected to involve All3Media injecting funds into the newly merged entity, as it is the smaller of the two production powerhouses.
A Year of Strategic Moves and Speculation
These talks are the latest development in a year of significant manoeuvring within the UK television production sector. Last year, Banijay explored a potential takeover offer for ITV Studios after learning that ITV and RedBird IMI had held discussions about merging ITV Studios with All3Media. Banijay did not, however, make a formal offer.
In a separate major move last November, Comcast, the parent company of Sky, entered talks to acquire ITV's broadcasting business for an estimated £1.6 billion. This context highlights the intense consolidation and strategic partnerships currently defining the media landscape.
Past Controversies and Future Productions
Banijay itself made headlines in the summer of 2023 following an internal investigation into the BBC's MasterChef. The probe upheld 45 allegations against host Greg Wallace, including claims of inappropriate sexual language and one incident of unwelcome physical contact. It also upheld one allegation against co-presenter John Torode regarding the use of racist language.
As a result, Wallace was dropped from the show and Torode's contract was not renewed. This episode underscores the significant cultural and managerial responsibilities that come with overseeing such a vast and influential content library.
If completed, the merger between Banijay and All3Media would create an unparalleled European television production giant, controlling some of the most valuable intellectual property and format rights in the world.
