BMW's Alpina Brand Targets Bentley, Positioned Between M Models and Rolls-Royce
BMW Alpina Aims at Bentley, Sits Between M and Rolls-Royce

BMW is set to relaunch its recently acquired Alpina brand with a strategic focus on upmarket designs that will occupy a unique position within the automotive hierarchy. The new Alpina models will be positioned between BMW's high-performance M vehicles and the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce marque, with clear ambitions to compete directly against Bentley and Mercedes' prestigious Maybach lineup.

Historical Background and Integration

Alpina was originally founded by Burkard Bovensiepen in 1965, beginning as a specialist independent BMW tuner before evolving into a respected low-volume manufacturer. BMW completed its acquisition of the brand in 2022, with full integration into the BMW Alpina luxury division finalized earlier this year. A new Alpina badge was unveiled last month, though specific details about upcoming models remained undisclosed until now.

Strategic Positioning and Model Plans

Speaking at the launch event for the new all-electric BMW i3 in Munich, BMW's development chief Joachim Post provided crucial insights into how Alpina will fit within the BMW family and which models will spearhead its revival. When questioned about Alpina's relationship to BMW's M performance models, Post explained the fundamental distinction between the two brands.

"M represents a philosophy centered on driving dynamics – encompassing power delivery, steering response, and overall control," Post stated. "Alpina has always followed a different path. While M was born on the racetrack and adapted for road use with a sports-oriented approach, Alpina emphasizes speed combined with comfort and luxury. It appeals to a different audience than those who prefer the M experience."

Post confirmed that Alpina models will feature enhanced bespoke finishes and greater interior customization options, distinguishing them further from standard BMW offerings. Although he didn't rule out an Alpina version of the new i3 electric vehicle, he indicated that other models would take priority in the initial launch phase.

Initial Model Lineup and Electric Future

"We'll introduce Alpina starting from the top of our range," Post revealed. "Our launch will begin with the 7 Series sedan and the X7 SUV." He also confirmed that all-electric Alpina models are likely in the future, emphasizing that "we are technology open" regarding powertrain options.

The BMW 7 Series is expected to receive a mid-life refresh later this year as part of BMW's Neue Klasse strategy, with an Alpina variant likely to follow that update. This positioning strategy mirrors that of Mercedes' Maybach brand, which enhances luxury on Mercedes' top-tier models including the S-Class, GLS, SL, and all-electric EQS SUV.

Potential Early Reveal

There may be an early glimpse of a standalone Alpina model before the official launch. Industry rumors suggest that BMW might showcase a new Alpina model at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este event in Northern Italy during mid-May, offering enthusiasts a preview of what's to come from the revitalized luxury brand.
