The issue stems from a flaw in the bonding process used for the camera housing, as identified by GM's supplier. This weakness, combined with the camera's mounting configuration, can allow moisture to penetrate the unit. Consequently, the rearview camera display may show a distorted image or remain entirely blank, severely impairing a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a malfunctioning rearview image significantly elevates the risk of collisions by compromising motorists' rear visibility. The agency has highlighted this as a serious safety concern in its official recall documentation.
