Lloyds Bank Closes 5 Branches This Week: Full List of Locations
Lloyds Bank Shuts 5 Branches This Week

Lloyds Banking Group is accelerating its retreat from the British high street this week, with five more local branches set to shut their doors permanently. This move forms part of a much larger strategic shift that will see a total of 71 Lloyds branches close across the UK.

The Wave of High Street Bank Closures

The closures are not isolated to Lloyds. The entire banking sector is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by a seismic shift in customer behaviour. According to the bank's own figures, more than 21 million customers now primarily use mobile and online banking services, leading to a steep decline in footfall at physical locations. Consumer group Which? has highlighted the scale of the retreat, revealing that 218 branches across the Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands are scheduled to close in 2025 alone.

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group stated that the decision reflects changing customer habits, with millions choosing to manage their money digitally. They emphasised that customers can still access services at any remaining Lloyds, Halifax, or Bank of Scotland branch, as well as at Post Offices and the newly emerging shared banking hubs. Furthermore, cash deposits can be made at over 30,000 PayPoint locations nationwide.

Impact on Communities and Available Alternatives

However, consumer advocates have raised significant concerns. They warn that the rapid closure of physical branches risks leaving behind vulnerable groups, including the elderly, disabled, and those who are digitally excluded. This is particularly acute in rural areas where alternative services may be sparse. The issue is compounded by the fact that, as admitted by the government-backed Cash Access UK scheme, tens of millions of people in the UK still rely on cash regularly for budgeting and everyday essentials.

As an alternative to traditional branches, the banking industry is promoting the rollout of shared banking hubs. By August 2025, 178 of these hubs had opened across the country, with more in the pipeline. These hubs allow customers from different banks to withdraw cash and speak to advisers. Basic banking services are also available at over 11,500 Post Offices, though campaigners argue this is not a full substitute for a dedicated, fully staffed branch.

This Week's Lloyds Branch Closures

The latest round of shutdowns began earlier this week. Below is the full list of Lloyds branches closing in January 2026:

  • Lewes – January 19, 2026
  • Swadlincote – January 20, 2026
  • Hedge End – January 21, 2026
  • Penzance – January 21, 2026
  • Petersfield – January 21, 2026

Lloyds is far from alone in this trend. Major rivals including Santander, Barclays, and NatWest have all confirmed extensive branch cutbacks, fuelling fears that in-person banking could become a relic of the past in many towns, raising fresh questions about the pace of the UK's move towards a cashless society.
