Fence Paint Colors That Could Devalue Your Home by 5%

When it comes to painting your fence, certain colours could lower your property's value and make your garden feel 'tired', according to a property expert. A peeling, weathered fence can be a real eyesore, but the good news is that you don't need a professional to give it a fresh coat. Many homeowners tackle fence painting themselves as an easy way to enhance their gardens, and summer is an especially good time for it.

While most people gravitate towards brown or vibrant shades, one specialist has revealed which fence colours might actually be reducing your property's value. Paint choices, both inside and outside your home, come down to personal taste, but they could mean you receive less money when you sell. If you're planning to put your house on the market soon, it might be worthwhile to repaint your fence in a different shade.

Bright Red

Jonny Christie, co-founder of The Property Buying Company, said: 'Bold colours like bright red can be quite polarising in our experience. They often dominate the outdoor space and make it harder for buyers to see the garden as a neutral, usable extension of the home.' The specialist suggested that a bright red fence could knock 1-3% off a property's value.

Yellow

According to the specialist, yellow fencing tends to weather rapidly and unevenly. This can create the impression that the exterior hasn't been properly maintained, even when the rest of the property appears well-kept. It's believed that a yellow fence could reduce a home's value by 1-2%.

Dark Brown

The property specialist said: 'Dark brown is a common choice, but when it's faded or patchy, it can make the garden feel tired. Buyers often see this as immediate upkeep or cost.' The expert suggested a dark brown fence could knock 3-5% off a home's value.

Very Bright or Neon Colours

Jonny continued: 'Anything too bold or unusual tends to limit mass appeal. Buyers want to picture themselves in the space, and strong personal choices can make that more difficult.' The specialist warned that a very bright or neon coloured fence could reduce property values by 3-5%.
