Over 800 UK Postcodes Get £25 Cold Weather Payment After Freeze
1.5m Households to Receive DWP Cold Weather Payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated a major round of cold weather payments, providing vital financial support to households across the nation. This one-off payment of £25 is set to reach nearly 1.5 million eligible homes following a sustained period of freezing conditions.

Who Qualifies and Which Areas Are Affected?

The payment is automatically triggered for each seven-day period where the recorded temperature in an area is zero degrees Celsius or below. The latest qualifying period ran from 30 December 2025 to 9 January 2026.

This financial support targets residents in over 800 postcode districts across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. To receive the money, individuals must be claiming one of several specified benefits. These include:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

The DWP has stated that payments should land in bank accounts within 14 days of the trigger, meaning most eligible recipients should see the funds by late January.

Scotland's Separate Winter Heating Scheme

It is crucial to note that this particular DWP scheme does not apply in Scotland. The Scottish Government operates its own annual Winter Heating Payment, which is a fixed sum paid regardless of temperature fluctuations. Therefore, residents of Scotland will not receive this specific £25 cold weather payment from the DWP.

Navigating the Winter Support Landscape

This intervention highlights the ongoing need for targeted support during the coldest months. The mechanism is designed to help vulnerable households with the immediate extra costs of heating their homes during severe weather.

With the UK weather forecast predicting variable conditions, further payment triggers for other periods this winter remain a possibility. Eligible individuals do not need to apply; the payment is made automatically based on their benefit status and their local weather data.

For those struggling with energy bills, this payment is separate from the Warm Home Discount scheme and other forms of local authority support, which may also be available.
