Rafael Leao has decided to turn down a move to the Premier League this summer, despite recently expressing admiration for Manchester United. The AC Milan and Portugal forward, who has been linked with a transfer to England, is determined to stay at the San Siro and help the club bounce back from a difficult season.
Leao's Commitment to Milan
According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao has already spoken with club advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic and communicated his desire to remain with the Rossoneri. The 26-year-old aims to become a key player for the team once again after a challenging campaign. Speaking earlier this week, Leao acknowledged the struggles of the past season, stating: "It was a season that tested my physical and psychological state to the maximum, and only those who experienced it closely with me know how difficult it was. For that reason, I want to thank everyone who did the possible and the impossible to make sure this season took a completely different direction. May Milan triumph again next season."
Leao joined Milan from Lille in 2019 and has since made 291 appearances, scoring 80 goals. He currently has two years remaining on his contract at the San Siro.
Premier League Interest
Despite his decision to stay, Leao has previously hinted at his affection for English football, particularly Manchester United and Arsenal. When asked about watching the Premier League, he replied: "Yeah, of course. No, I like United. I like United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo. So back then I used to watch them. And, yeah, I used to watch Manchester United. I like Arsenal also. Arsenal, yeah."
Both United and Arsenal are expected to be active in the summer transfer window, but it remains unclear whether Leao would feature in their plans if he were to reconsider his stance. Manchester United have prioritized signing a central midfielder following Casemiro's departure, with a deal for Atalanta's Ederson progressing. Meanwhile, Arsenal's transfer activity may depend on outgoings, as they continue to be linked with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Leao's decision to stay at Milan puts an end to speculation about a potential cut-price move, as the club looks to rebuild after a poor season. The forward is determined to rediscover his form and lead Milan back to success.
