George Russell has insisted that his biggest competition is himself as he looks to close the gap to Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the Formula One title race. The British driver, 28, has won once this season, but the 19-year-old Italian has claimed victory in the last three races, building a 20-point lead heading into this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Russell's Self-Improvement Focus
Reflecting on his fourth-place finish in Miami, Russell said he learned more from that race than the first three of the season combined. 'At the moment, I see my competitor as myself because I know if I tick all of my boxes, I can beat anybody,' he stated. 'Miami can happen, and I know my struggles at a track like Miami. I'm just really focused on getting the most out of myself and my team, and the rest sorts itself out.'
The Mercedes driver, who won from pole position in Montreal last year, is eager to return to a circuit he enjoys. 'Nothing really changes for me because it's still such early days. One weekend you have a tough race, and the next you come back and everything goes back to normal. I'm in a good place because I've learned a lot from Miami.'
Mercedes' Strong Start
Mercedes have dominated the opening four races of the season under Formula One's new regulations, winning all of them. The team is expected to bring a significant upgrade to Montreal, which could further extend their advantage over the rest of the grid and set up a two-way title battle between Russell and Antonelli.
Antonelli's Rise
Antonelli, in his second F1 season, has dramatically improved after an inconsistent debut campaign that raised doubts about his future. However, team principal Toto Wolff and Mercedes maintained full faith in the Italian, who replaced Lewis Hamilton after his move to Ferrari. Russell acknowledged his team-mate's talent: 'I saw how good he was last year. There's no surprise at all. He's an exceptionally fast driver and talented kid. He was on pole in race five last year, which was probably more of a surprise to me, how quick he was at that point. He's a really great driver.'
