Liverpool’s 2025/2026 season ended with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield, leaving the Reds in fifth place. As the campaign concludes, attention turns to a crucial summer transfer window, with many believing significant squad changes are required for Arne Slot’s side to mount a serious title challenge next year.
Owen's Bleak Prediction
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has cast doubt on the club’s ability to compete for the Premier League title next season. Speaking to Metro, Owen suggested that both Manchester City and Manchester United are better positioned to overhaul Arsenal, who secured their first championship in 22 years.
“I think a challenge next season is only going to come from Manchester,” Owen said. “Man City will be strong; they ran Arsenal very close and have a good group of young players. Manchester United can be title contenders under Michael Carrick, given their form since he arrived. Liverpool will hope to challenge, but they need to get everything right, and I’m not sure they are there yet.”
Owen’s forecast is particularly stark given that both Manchester clubs will be led by managers who have never won the Premier League. Pep Guardiola is leaving City this summer, while Michael Carrick, who took over from Ruben Amorim in January, signed a long-term deal on Friday.
Salah's Parting Message
Mohamed Salah, who spent nine years at Liverpool, played his final game for the club against Brentford. In a behind-the-scenes clip, Salah addressed his teammates and coaching staff, including Arne Slot, urging them to return to winning ways.
“Being Liverpool, to win something for Liverpool and win games, it’s the best thing that could happen to you,” Salah said. “I think it’s the best club in the world when you win something – and the worst club in the world when you lose. So you better win next year.”
Salah and outgoing left-back Andy Robertson were presented with gifts before the match to mark their nine-year tenures. The winger had previously issued a controversial warning on social media about Liverpool’s poor form, reiterating his point in person.
Looking Ahead
Liverpool’s defence of their 20th top-flight title fizzled out as Arsenal and City battled for supremacy. The Gunners ultimately ended their 22-year wait for a championship, leaving Liverpool with significant work to do. Salah’s departure adds to the challenges facing Slot, who must now rebuild a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
