United Airlines Boeing 767 Hits Street Lamp on New Jersey Turnpike During Landing
United Airlines Jet Strikes Street Lamp on Approach to Newark

An investigation has been launched after a United Airlines Boeing 767 clipped a street light on a busy road as it made its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when United Flight 169, arriving from Venice, Italy, struck a street lamp on the New Jersey Turnpike just moments before touching down.

Details of the Incident

The aircraft, a Boeing 767-400 with registration N77066, was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members. Despite hitting the light, the plane landed safely at approximately 2 p.m. local time. None of the individuals on board were injured. The New Jersey Turnpike, which runs adjacent to the airport's perimeter, is a heavily trafficked highway, and the plane's low altitude has raised urgent questions about the descent path.

Investigation Underway

Federal authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have opened an investigation into the low-altitude contact. A lead investigator from the NTSB is expected to arrive at Newark on Monday. Investigators have ordered United Airlines to secure the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) for immediate analysis. A preliminary report detailing the facts and circumstances is anticipated within 30 days.
