Smith was initially unhappy about her daughter receiving multiple Starbucks deliveries, but her perspective changed when she viewed the Ring doorbell footage. 'I saw a little old man walking up the steps,' Smith told Today.com. 'My heart just sank.' The 20-second clip showed an elderly man in plaid shirt and khakis gripping the handrail as he carefully delivered a brown paper bag.
Compelled to act, Smith used social media to track down what she called 'the precious man,' sharing the video in hopes of identifying him. The clip quickly amassed millions of views, and a Facebook user recognized Pulley as a regular DoorDash deliverer to her office.
From Retirement Back to Work
When Smith tracked down Pulley's address and visited with a $200 tip, she discovered the couple's difficult circumstances. Pulley had been forced out of retirement when his wife of 56 years, Brenda, abruptly lost her job at an insurance company. 'When she left, it really put a pinch on us to pay bills,' Pulley explained.
The couple receives Social Security benefits, but this wasn't enough to cover Brenda's expensive medication costing thousands annually. 'With just one income in the family, you have to push,' Pulley told WSMV 4 News. Over the past year, he has completed approximately 6,000 DoorDash deliveries full-time, working alongside his wife who stays behind the wheel while he makes the deliveries.
GoFundMe Campaign Explodes Overnight
Smith created a GoFundMe page titled 'Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again' that exploded online overnight. By the next day, more than 12,000 people had donated. The campaign eventually attracted contributions from over 32,000 donors, including a $20,000 contribution from DoorDash itself.
Smith and her daughter met the Pulleys at a local burger restaurant to reveal the staggering total. 'They are the most genuine people I have ever met,' Smith said of the couple. 'He genuinely loves and cares for her and she genuinely loves and cares for him.'
Windfall Won't Stop Work Ethic
Despite receiving nearly $1 million, Pulley revealed he plans to return to work within days. 'They've set my wife and I up so that we can live a more comfortable life,' the hardworking driver told Today.com. 'But after a week or two of this and it cools down, we'll get back to work because I feel good being useful.'
Pulley explained that while the job was initially for financial reasons, it has provided unexpected benefits. 'I taught myself how to be a good worker again,' he said, noting that the work provides daily exercise. His last few shifts have been challenging due to people stopping for pictures with the now-famous delivery driver.
Financial Stress Eased But Work Continues
Brenda Pulley said they plan to use the funds to slow down and ease financial stress. 'When you're past your mid-70s, there's not exactly a line of people waiting to hire you,' she noted, explaining the difficulty older workers face finding employment.
Her husband added that the donations are 'making life livable once again.' The couple expressed astonishment at the generosity of strangers. 'It's just really difficult to believe that there's that many people that are that generous to try to help us,' Brenda said. 'People that don't even know us.'
