Fact Check Analysis: Welsh Youth Unemployment Figures and Viral Kuwait Base Photo Debunked

A comprehensive roundup of recent fact checks compiled by Full Fact, the United Kingdom's largest fact-checking charity, has exposed two significant cases of misinformation circulating online. The investigation scrutinizes a political claim regarding youth unemployment statistics in Wales and a widely shared but fabricated image purporting to show a damaged US military base in Kuwait.

Examining the Claim About Youth Unemployment in Wales

In a Facebook post this week, Harri Roberts, Plaid Cymru's Senedd candidate for Gwyr Abertawe, asserted that "one in six" young people in Wales are "unemployed." Following Full Fact's initial publication of their fact check, Plaid Cymru removed the post from their social media channels.

The latest available statistics from September 2025 do indicate that the unemployment rate for 16 to 24-year-olds in Wales stands at 16.3%, which approximates to one in six. However, this percentage specifically refers to those within the economically active population who are seeking employment but cannot find work.

The critical omission in Mr. Roberts' statement is the substantial portion of young people classified as 'economically inactive.' This category includes individuals who are neither working nor actively looking for employment. In Wales, approximately 41% of 16 to 24-year-olds fall into this group.

When considering the total population of young people in Wales, which numbered around 340,200 in September 2025, the actual percentage unemployed is closer to 9.6%. This translates to roughly one in ten young Welsh individuals being unemployed, not one in six as claimed.

Detailed breakdowns show that of the 201,000 economically active young people, 32,800 were officially counted as unemployed. Meanwhile, among the 139,300 economically inactive individuals, about two-thirds are students engaged in education.

It would be factually accurate to state that approximately one in six 16 to 24-year-olds in Wales are not in education, employment, or training, commonly referred to as Neet. This broader category encompasses both unemployed individuals seeking work and those who are economically inactive for various reasons, such as health issues or family care responsibilities.

Viral Image of US Base in Kuwait Exposed as AI-Generated Fake

A separate fact check has identified a widely circulated image claiming to show a destroyed US military base in Kuwait as completely fabricated. The photograph, which spread across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms last week, depicts severely damaged buildings with visible flames and smoke plumes from an aerial perspective.

The image was captioned with the misleading statement: "Latest Status of the US Base in Kuwait." While US bases in Kuwait have reportedly faced attacks from Iran prior to the current ceasefire, this particular visual representation is not authentic.

Full Fact investigators determined that the image does not correspond with genuine satellite imagery of US military installations in Kuwait. Furthermore, no media reports corroborate the specific destruction shown in the photograph.

The conclusive evidence came from the discovery of an invisible SynthID watermark embedded within the image file. This digital marker indicates that the photograph was either created or substantially edited using Google's artificial intelligence tools, confirming its status as an AI-generated fabrication designed to mislead viewers about military developments in the region.
