DWP Urges Pensioners to Claim £80 Weekly Boost as £2.5bn Goes Unclaimed
Pensioners Missing Out on £80 Weekly DWP Support

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a fresh call to action, revealing that a staggering number of older people across the UK are missing out on vital financial support. New figures show that hundreds of thousands of eligible households are not claiming Pension Credit, leaving an estimated £2.5 billion of support untouched.

Who is Eligible for the Extra £80 Per Week?

According to the latest DWP data, almost a million households could be receiving an average of £4,300 a year, which breaks down to just over £80 per week. Currently, around 1.4 million people in the UK receive this top-up benefit, but a further 900,000 eligible families have yet to apply.

Pension Credit is designed to provide additional income for people who have reached State Pension age. Single pensioners with a weekly income below £227.10 may qualify, while the threshold for couples is £346.60 per week.

Common Myths Putting People Off Applying

The DWP believes several persistent misconceptions are preventing people from applying for the support they are legally entitled to. Many incorrectly assume they are not eligible if they:

  • Have savings or own their own home.
  • Are still working part-time or receive a small occupational pension.
  • Have been turned down for the benefit in the past.

Other significant barriers include a reluctance to be seen as 'needing' to claim, a belief that the application process is too complex, or a fear that claiming might affect other existing benefits. Some simply feel they can manage without or haven't got around to applying.

How to Check Your Eligibility and Claim

The process to check eligibility has been made straightforward. Pensioners, or their friends and family, can use the official GOV.UK Pension Credit calculator online to get a quick estimate of what they might receive.

Alternatively, claims can be lodged directly by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234. The phone lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

For those seeking independent guidance, organisations like Age UK, Independent Age, Income Max, and Citizens Advice offer expert support to help navigate the process and ensure no one misses out on the financial help they deserve.
