The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a significant extension to the deadline for migrating certain legacy benefit claimants onto the Universal Credit (UC) system. This decision, which delays the closure of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Housing Benefit until the end of summer, is designed to provide crucial assistance to vulnerable individuals who face substantial barriers in transitioning to the new benefit framework.
Supporting Hard-to-Reach Claimants
This extension specifically targets 'hard-to-reach' customers, including those with complex needs or limited access to digital services, ensuring they receive the necessary support to navigate the migration process smoothly. The DWP aims to mitigate potential hardships by offering additional guidance and resources during this period.
Migration Progress and Challenges
To date, over 1.9 million people have been successfully moved to Universal Credit, with notable groups such as 135,000 income support and income-related jobseeker’s allowance claimants already transitioned. However, the Public Accounts Committee has previously issued warnings, highlighting that failures in the migration process could result in 'real-world misery for thousands' of claimants, underscoring the importance of this deadline extension.
The postponement reflects ongoing efforts to address these concerns, prioritising the well-being of claimants over rigid timelines. By extending the deadline, the DWP seeks to ensure a more inclusive and supportive transition, reducing the risk of benefit gaps or administrative errors that could adversely affect vulnerable populations.
