A 76-year-old Vietnam War veteran has been compelled to leave retirement and now works late-night shifts delivering DoorDash orders to help pay for his family's escalating medical expenses. Larry Phillip Colvin, who will turn 77 in May, resumed employment a decade after retiring when his Social Security benefits proved insufficient to cover the rising healthcare costs for his wife and son.
Mounting Medical Costs Drive Veteran Back to Work
Colvin explained that he had no choice but to return to the workforce as medical bills continued to climb. 'I had to do something, and I can’t hold down a regular job,' he told KTVT. His wife is facing potential surgeries, while his son battles serious health conditions, including lupus and dystonia, which are autoimmune diseases. The veteran now delivers food most nights of the week, taking only Wednesdays off to attend church, as he strives to support his household.
Late-Night Encounter Sparks Community Support
Colvin's situation came to public attention after he delivered an order to a home in Mabank, Texas, around 10:30 PM on March 14, while wearing a veteran's cap. Savannah Saulters, a mother of two and his customer, was deeply moved by the encounter. 'There should be no reason that a 76-year-old man is delivering my pizza that late at night,' Saulters remarked. She noted that his kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on her and others in the community who have met him through their orders.
GoFundMe Campaign Raises Over $76,000 to Ease Burden
In response, Saulters launched a GoFundMe campaign to alleviate Colvin's financial pressure and allow him to stop working. The fundraiser quickly gained traction, raising more than $76,000 within days. 'No parent should have to choose between earning a living and being there for their sick child,' Saulters wrote in the campaign description. 'That's why I'm starting this fundraiser - to help this devoted father take time off from DoorDash so he can focus on what matters most: Caring for his son.'
Family Concerns and Veteran's Gratitude
Colvin's daughter-in-law, Donna Colvin, expressed concern about the toll the work is taking on him. 'I think it's very hard on him. I think he's almost 77 years old, and it's gotta take a toll somewhere,' she said. Despite the challenges, Colvin remains grateful for the outpouring of support. 'I say, 'God bless that lady,' he stated, referring to Saulters. 'I'm very grateful. It'll help pay off some bills.' He added that the funds will provide much-needed breathing room for his family during this difficult time.
