Major Debt Relief for Unpaid Carers Following DWP Review
Tens of thousands of unpaid carers across the United Kingdom could be on the verge of having significant debts completely wiped out as the government initiates a comprehensive review into benefit overpayments. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is preparing to launch a substantial reassessment exercise this year, aiming to address systemic failures that have persisted for over a decade.
This initiative comes after many vulnerable individuals, including those providing essential care for family members and friends, were wrongly pursued for repayment of Carer's Allowance overpayments. Some faced bills as high as £20,000 and even the threat of prosecution for unknowingly breaching complex earning rules by minuscule amounts.
The Root of the Overpayment Scandal
Unpaid carers, who typically provide at least 35 hours of care weekly, are entitled to Carer's Allowance payments of £83.30 per week. However, issues arise when carers earn additional income, potentially making them ineligible if they exceed the £196 weekly earnings threshold.
The scandal emerged as many carers, unaware they had surpassed this threshold due to fluctuating work hours or pay, accumulated substantial debts through repayment orders. Approximately 26,000 people are believed to have been affected by these overpayment demands, with some families reporting they were treated like criminals for minor, unintentional breaches.
Eligibility Criteria for Debt Cancellation
Financial expert Lisa Webb, appearing on BBC Morning Live, clarified that individuals may be eligible for debt reduction or cancellation if they were asked to repay Carer's Allowance at least once since 2015. Those whose work hours or pay fluctuated during specific periods, leading to unknowingly exceeding the threshold, could qualify for complete debt relief.
"If you've already repaid the money, you may be entitled to a refund," Webb advised. "While the government hasn't confirmed compensation payments, it's certainly worth considering that you might receive at least some money back."

Affected individuals do not need to take immediate action, as the DWP is expected to contact eligible parties "in due course." This timeframe could range from days to several months. Experts recommend maintaining thorough records of all relevant paperwork and regularly checking official resources for updates.
