Summer 2026 Holiday Alert: Keep All Receipts Amid Flight Disruption Warnings

A travel insurance specialist has issued a stark warning to anyone with summer 2026 holidays booked, urging them to keep all receipts and prepare for potential cancellations and delays. This new alert comes as airlines navigate fuel supply challenges stemming from the ongoing Middle East conflict, which could lead to operational pressures and fare increases.

Fuel Supply Concerns and Passenger Rights

Tom Vaughan, a travel insurance expert at Confused.com, highlighted that some energy bosses claim Europe has only six weeks' worth of jet fuel left. He advised passengers to be proactive, stating, "For Brits planning to travel this summer, it’s worth being aware that flight cancellations and delays could happen as airlines respond to operational pressures." Vaughan emphasized that UK passengers have rights if their flight is cancelled, including a refund or alternative flight, even for non-refundable tickets.

Steps to Take If Disruption Occurs

If travellers experience disruption, Vaughan recommends the following steps:

  1. Contact the airline immediately to confirm options for rebooking or a refund.
  2. Keep receipts for essential costs like food, accommodation, or transport, as these may be reimbursed.
  3. Check if a package holiday is ATOL protected and contact the travel provider for support.
  4. Review travel insurance policies and speak to insurers to understand claimable extra costs.

He added that passengers may still be entitled to assistance, such as meals or hotel stays, while waiting for a new flight. Those who pay by credit card may have additional protection if plans go awry.

Inflation and Airline Responses

The Office for National Statistics reported that inflation climbed to 3.3% in March, driven by higher fuel prices linked to the Iran conflict. While air fares in March were not yet impacted, inflation is expected to rise as higher jet fuel costs are passed to passengers. Airlines like KLM have adjusted schedules, cancelling 80 return flights within Europe due to rising kerosene costs, though this represents less than 1% of their European flights. Affected passengers will be rebooked promptly.

Lufthansa has hedged approximately 80% of its 2026 kerosene requirements at pre-crisis prices, positioning it better than many competitors. Meanwhile, easyJet reports no current disruption and no planned changes to its flight schedule.

Importance of Travel Insurance

Vaughan stressed that it is "always sensible" to take out travel insurance before going away. He explained, "Even if you are able to claim directly via the airline, an insurer can guide you on how to make a claim. With the right policy in place, you may also be able to claim back for other parts of your holiday that were affected as a result." This advice underscores the need for preparedness in an uncertain travel landscape.
