BrewDog Distilling Brands Face Closure as Company Focuses on Core Beer Business
BrewDog Distilling Brands to Close, Jobs at Risk

BrewDog Distilling Operations to Cease Amid Strategic Refocus

Significant job concerns have emerged at BrewDog following the company's announcement that it will close all of its distilling brands, including Duo Rum, Abstrakt Vodka, and Lonewolf Gin. The Scottish drinks firm confirmed that production at its Ellon distillery in Aberdeenshire will wind down over the coming months, with the future of the facility itself under review.

Strategic Shift Toward Core Beer Business

The company, established in 2007, stated that this difficult decision was made to concentrate resources on its beer portfolio, most notably the highly successful Punk IPA brand. BrewDog's Wonderland cocktail range will continue unaffected, but the distilling division will completely cease operations after fulfilling existing supply commitments and selling remaining stock.

A BrewDog spokesperson explained: "After careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to cease production of our distilling brands, with the exception of Wonderland cocktails. This will allow us to sharpen our focus and concentrate our efforts on our beer and the continued growth of Wonderland."

The spokesperson added: "We're incredibly proud of what the distillery team has built and want to thank everyone who has worked on, contributed to, and supported the distilling business over the years."

Political Concerns and Industry Challenges

Gordon and Buchan Conservative MP Harriet Cross expressed serious concerns about the announcement's impact on local employment and the wider drinks sector. "The announcement of the closure of BrewDog's distilling business is deeply concerning," she stated. "The staff at BrewDog whose jobs are now at risk will understandably be very worried by this."

The MP highlighted broader industry difficulties, noting: "This decision highlights the growing issues facing the drinks industry and hospitality sector, with challenging market conditions causing financial difficulties. Residents in and around Ellon rely on employment from BrewDog, and an important local business making cutbacks like this is very unsettling for the area."

Cross confirmed she would be writing to BrewDog management to seek clarification on several key points:

  • The specific implications for employment at the Ellon facility
  • Whether this decision will affect other parts of BrewDog's business operations
  • What support might be available for affected staff members

Transition Period and Future Considerations

The distilling arm will gradually wind down operations over the next few months, with the company committing to honour all existing supply agreements during this transition period. BrewDog has indicated that the future use of the distillery building itself will be determined at a later date, once the closure process is complete.

This strategic move reflects the challenging economic environment facing the drinks industry, with many companies reassessing their portfolios to concentrate on core revenue-generating brands. The closure represents a significant shift for BrewDog, which had expanded into spirits production as part of its broader growth strategy before now refocusing on its original beer business.
