Frog Bikes Enters Administration: Royal-Favourite Brand Faces Redundancies

Frog Bikes, the iconic children's bicycle manufacturer beloved by the royal family, has officially entered administration, leading to significant staff redundancies. The brand, which gained widespread recognition after Princess Kate shared a photograph of Prince Louis riding one of its bikes, is now facing severe financial difficulties.

Administration and Redundancies Confirmed

Official records from The Gazette reveal that Frog Bikes appointed Anthony John Wright and Alastair Rex Massey of FRP Advisory Trading Limited as administrators on Thursday, February 19. This development has been confirmed on the company's website, which continues to sell bicycles despite the administration process.

Staff at Frog Bikes are being made redundant, with several employees posting on LinkedIn to describe it as "a difficult day." According to FRP Advisory, there have already been 15 redundancies, with the company employing 49 people at the time of the administration appointment. Frog Bikes is headquartered in Ascot, Berkshire, and operates a factory in Pontypool, south-east Wales.

Financial Struggles and Contributing Factors

The brand has cited multiple factors for its financial collapse, including tighter financial markets and reduced access to funding, which made it increasingly challenging for the growing manufacturing business to secure necessary working capital. Additionally, Frog Bikes blamed Brexit and difficulties adjusting to post-pandemic supply chain disruptions.

In 2021, the owners claimed that leaving the European Union cost them £250,000 in just two months. By 2023, their accounts showed losses of £500,000, highlighting the escalating financial pressures.

Royal Endorsement and Market Position

Frog Bikes was founded in 2013 by parents Jerry and Shelley Lawson with the goal of creating high-quality, lightweight bicycles specifically designed for children. The brand gained significant attention in 2023 when Princess Kate released a picture of Prince Louis riding a Frog Bike to celebrate his third birthday, cementing its status as a royal-favourite product.

The company worked with Olympic bike engineer Dimitris Katsanis to develop bikes perfectly suited for young riders, establishing itself as a market leader in premium children's bicycles in the United Kingdom.

Future Prospects and Potential Sale

Despite entering administration, Frog Bikes will continue to trade during the process, and its website remains active, though some models are listed as out of stock. The administrators have indicated they are considering a potential sale of the business, with several parties already expressing interest.

Anthony John Wright, one of the administrators, stated, "Frog Bikes is a well-loved brand with an excellent reputation for producing high-quality bikes that are popular with children and families across the country. We're encouraged by the level of interest we've already received from prospective buyers."

He added, "Our focus now is on continuing to trade the business while we work to identify the best possible outcome for all stakeholders. We would encourage any interested parties to contact us as soon as possible."

In a statement shared with Cycling Weekly in February, co-founder Jerry Lawson emphasized that demand for Frog Bikes' products remains strong. He said, "The business remains the clear market leader in premium children’s bikes in the UK and continues to be trusted by parents and loved by children."
