Major UK Car Recall: 44,000 Peugeot, Jeep, Fiat Vehicles at Fire Risk
Approximately 44,000 vehicles across the United Kingdom have been urgently recalled by automotive giant Stellantis due to a critical safety fault that poses a potential fire hazard. The recall, announced on Thursday 02 April 2026, affects a range of popular models from brands including Peugeot, Jeep, Fiat, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Vauxhall, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo.
Technical Fault Identified
The recall specifically relates to an issue with the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the pole protection cup of the 48-volt belt starter generator (BSG). Stellantis has identified that in wet conditions, there could be contact between these components, allowing water to enter the engine bay. In a worst-case scenario, this malfunction could lead to a potential risk of fire in the engine department, raising serious safety concerns for drivers and passengers.
Affected Models and Production Dates
The vehicles impacted by this recall were produced between 2023 and 2026. Key models affected include the Citroen C3, Peugeot 208, and Vauxhall Mokka, though the issue spans multiple brands under the Stellantis umbrella. Owners of these cars are being proactively contacted by the manufacturer to address the problem promptly.
Stellantis's Response and Repair Process
In a voluntary move, Stellantis has prioritised customer safety by initiating this recall. The company stated: "Having customer safety and satisfaction at the core of its values, Stellantis is voluntarily recalling an estimated 44,000 vehicles in the UK due to a potential issue concerning the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the belt starter generator (BSG)."
The corrective action involves:
- Replacing the pole protection cup of the 48V belt starter generator with one that offers higher insulation.
- Checking and adjusting the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the BSG if necessary.
This service is estimated to take approximately 30 minutes and will be performed free of charge at authorised dealerships. Stellantis is urging all affected vehicle owners to contact their nearest dealer immediately to schedule an appointment, ensuring their cars are inspected and repaired without delay.
Safety Implications and Owner Actions
This recall highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and manufacturer accountability in the automotive industry. With fire risks being a severe safety threat, Stellantis's proactive approach aims to mitigate any potential incidents before they occur. Owners of the recalled models are advised to heed the manufacturer's instructions and arrange for repairs as soon as possible to ensure their vehicles are safe for use, particularly in adverse weather conditions where the fault is most likely to manifest.
