Powerball Jackpot Hits $1.6bn for Christmas, Fourth-Largest in US History
$1.6bn Powerball Jackpot Ahead of Christmas Draw

One extremely fortunate participant in the American Powerball lottery could find their Christmas transformed beyond imagination, with the jackpot soaring to a staggering $1.6 billion ahead of Monday night's drawing.

A Historic Holiday Windfall

This colossal prize, fuelled by 45 consecutive draws without a top-tier winner since the last jackpot was claimed on 6 September, now ranks as the fourth-largest in Powerball history and the fifth-biggest ever offered by a US lottery. The winning numbers that eluded players on Saturday were white balls 4, 5, 28, 52, 69 and the red Powerball 20, leaving the $1.5bn prize unclaimed and setting the stage for an even bigger Monday payout.

The potential winner faces a monumental choice: they can opt for an annuitised prize estimated at the full $1.60 billion, paid as an immediate sum followed by 29 annual payments rising by 5% each year. Alternatively, they can take a lump-sum cash payment estimated at $735.3 million. Both colossal figures are quoted before the inevitable deduction of taxes.

Long Odds and Significant Secondary Wins

Officials from Powerball caution that the dream remains a long shot, with the odds of securing Monday's jackpot standing at a daunting 1 in 292.2 million. "Powerball is giving players a chance to dream bigger than ever this holiday season," remarked Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. He added that ticket sales support vital public programmes nationwide, encouraging responsible participation in the game.

While the top prize rolled over, Saturday's draw did create several new millionaires. Eight tickets sold in California, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio, and two in Michigan matched all five white balls, each winning a $1 million prize. Payouts in California differ, as they are pari-mutuel and depend on sales and winner numbers. Furthermore, the draw produced 112 tickets that won $50,000 and 22 tickets that secured $150,000.

Chasing a Record Payout

The current jackpot run is now on its 46th drawing. The all-time US lottery record remains the $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won in 2022 by a single ticket holder in California, who chose a lump-sum payment of $997.6 million. The game is played across 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, meaning millions will be checking their numbers on Christmas Eve, hoping for a life-changing holiday surprise.
