Millions of Motorists to Receive Compensation in Car Finance Scandal

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is set to publish its final decisions on a long-awaited industry-wide compensation scheme this Monday afternoon. This programme aims to address widespread mis-selling of car finance agreements, with millions of motorists expected to receive payouts averaging £700 per agreement.

Scope and Eligibility of the Compensation Scheme

Under the latest proposals, the scheme will cover car finance agreements taken out between April 6, 2007, and November 1, 2024. The FCA estimates that approximately 14 million deals, representing 44% of all agreements made since 2007, were unfair and therefore eligible for compensation. While the average payout is projected to be around £700, individual amounts will vary based on specific circumstances.

The total cost to the industry is anticipated to reach £11 billion, encompassing both the compensation payouts and the operational expenses of administering the scheme. This substantial figure underscores the scale of the mis-selling issue that has affected consumers over nearly two decades.

Industry and Consumer Responses

Lenders and car finance providers have expressed concerns about the proposed compensation levels, arguing that the expected amounts are too high and may not accurately reflect customer losses. Conversely, some consumer groups and MPs contend that many motorists could still be short-changed under the current plans, highlighting ongoing debates about fairness and adequacy.

Craig Tebbutt, a financial health expert at Equifax UK, advised consumers to proactively check their paperwork in preparation. "Many consumers don't know how to check their eligibility and expect the process to be a hassle, with old or missing paperwork being a real barrier," he noted. Equifax has introduced a car finance checker within its new app to help individuals review past agreements and streamline the complaint process.

Streamlined Process and Timeline

The FCA has implemented several changes to the compensation process since unveiling initial proposals last year. These adjustments include granting lenders additional time to contact affected customers once the scheme officially launches. However, the regulator is also aiming to expedite redress by allowing eligible individuals to accept compensation immediately, without awaiting a final determination.

This streamlined approach is expected to facilitate the distribution of payouts to millions of people throughout 2026. Motorists who believe they are eligible are encouraged to use a template on the FCA's website to submit complaints to their lenders, ensuring they are well-positioned to receive compensation as soon as possible.
