Her famous on-screen character has survived countless conflicts in the Jacobite era, but now Outlander star Caitriona Balfe has faced defeat in a real-life planning battle over her Glasgow flat.
Council Rejects Rental Application
Ms Balfe, 46, and her husband Tony McGill, 49, sought permission to let out their three-bedroom apartment in Glasgow's trendy Finnieston area. The couple applied to allow visitors to occupy the £400,000 property, but Glasgow City Council officials firmly rejected their proposal.
The council stated that noisy guests could significantly disturb neighbours and refused to authorise the move. This decision was based on concerns that the flat's use would change from a permanent residence to a commercial short-term let.
Appeal to Scottish Government Fails
Mr McGill, a former manager for Scottish rock band The Fratellis, appealed to the Scottish Government in an attempt to overturn the council's ruling. However, the government upheld the original decision, dealing a final blow to the couple's plans.
An appeal document argued that the property would only be let to longer-term visitors and would not function as a 'party flat'. It emphasised that the proposed use was to accommodate up to six residents on a 'mid-stay basis', likely families or pre-formed groups seeking self-catering accommodation.
The document stated: 'The occupation of a large three-bedroom flat by such a number of occupiers would not be unusual.' It further insisted that the property would not be used as a party or event venue by short-stay residents.
Official Reasoning for Rejection
Council officials wrote to Mr McGill last month, detailing their reasons for rejecting the plans. They explained: 'The use of the property for short-term letting would utilise all spaces within the flat. It would no longer be used as a permanent residence, as such the commercial use of the flat would be evident and is significant enough to amount to a material change of use.'
Government reporter Bryn Bowker supported this view, stating: 'I find that insufficient evidence has been submitted to demonstrate that the proposed use would not entail a materially different pattern of use than that associated with its occupation on a normal domestic basis. I conclude that the proposed use would not be lawful and would require planning permission.'
Balfe's Career and Personal Life
Caitriona Balfe is internationally renowned for her role as the time-travelling heroine Claire Fraser in the historical fantasy drama Outlander, a part she has portrayed for over a decade. The show's eighth season commenced last month and will bring the epic saga to its conclusion.
Ms Balfe grew up in Ireland before leaving at age 18 to pursue a modelling career. She married Tony McGill in 2019, and the couple have a son together.
Despite their efforts to present a reasonable case for mid-stay letting, the planning authorities remained unconvinced, prioritising neighbourhood impact and usage regulations over the couple's rental aspirations.
