Builders have made a remarkable discovery in the heart of Ripon, a North Yorkshire city steeped in history, uncovering a well-preserved medieval well that dates back centuries. This find occurred during a £400,000 revamp of the Halls of Ripon Department Store, adding an unexpected historical dimension to the modern renovation project.
An Unexpected Historical Treasure
While excavations often yield remnants of the past, the discovery of a 42ft (12.8m) well in "excellent condition" has been described as striking historical gold. The well was found during groundwork for a new courtyard in Ripon, a city known for its wool trading heritage and location between the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
First Descent in Hundreds of Years
Builder Paul Fountain, assisted by mountaineering instructor Pete Breckon and his son Ollie, abseiled down the well using climbing ropes. Fountain called it a "mind-blowing experience," believing he might be the first person to enter the well in hundreds of years. He praised the top-notch stonework, highlighting the well's remarkable preservation.
Plans for Public Display
Robert Sterne, of Sterne Properties leading the works, told the BBC that plans are underway to install a secure reinforced glass cover over the well, transforming it into a special feature for public viewing. This initiative aims to integrate the historical find into the city's cultural landscape, enhancing its appeal to visitors.
Historical Significance and Local Reaction
Richard Taylor, Chair of Ripon Civic Society, hailed the unearthed well as an "impressive discovery." He noted that while other wells have been found around Ripon, none were located in the city centre. Taylor explained that such wells were crucial historical water sources, independent of rivers or rainwater collection.
Boost to Tourism and Revamp Plans
Barry Cooper, director of Halls of Ripon, described the well as "a welcome bonus" to the £400,000 transformation plans. Ripon already attracts thousands of tourists annually, boasting attractions like a grand central marketplace with over 100 stalls every Saturday and the historic Ripon Racecourse, which has hosted thoroughbred racing since 1900.
