Italian Entrepreneur Transforms London Phone Box into Tiramisu Cafe

In an innovative fusion of British heritage and Italian culinary tradition, a savvy entrepreneur has converted a decommissioned red telephone box in London into a fully operational tiramisu cafe. Daniele Benedettini, a 31-year-old native of Rome, spotted a pair of disused phone boxes in Russell Square and recognized a unique business opportunity.

From Phone Box to Pastry Shop

Benedettini launched Walkmisu in August 2020 after investing just £1,000 and completing all the renovation work himself. The compact 18-square-foot space presented challenges, but he cleverly merged the quintessential Britishness of the iconic phone boxes with his Italian roots by focusing on tiramisu, which required less kitchen space than pasta or pizza alternatives.

The cafe has become a hit with both tourists and Londoners, attracting constant attention from passers-by even when closed. Walkmisu offers four distinct varieties of homemade tiramisu, including pistachio and Biscoff flavors priced at £6.95, with additional options like Oreo available both in-store and through their online shop.

AI Technology Fuels Business Growth

Benedettini attributes significant portions of his business success to artificial intelligence, describing it as a "gamechanger" that saves him "hours of work." He utilizes AI for various functions including forecasting, supplier management, customer service, and developing the online side of his business.

"I could use it for forecast, suppliers, answering customers and to develop the online side of the business," Benedettini explained, noting his plans to utilize AI and agentic AI even more extensively as he expands.

Small Business Challenges and Solutions

A study of 500 SME owners by Accio Work, Alibaba's AI agent for small businesses, reveals broader trends in the entrepreneurial landscape:

  • 40% of small businesses are currently using AI technology
  • 53% report that running a business has grown more complicated in recent years
  • 69% struggle to complete daily tasks and estimate needing an additional two hours each day
  • Bookkeeping, chasing overdue payments, and filing paperwork rank as the most despised tasks

Benedettini particularly identifies supplier management as challenging, noting: "Managing international suppliers can be really stressful, they are always changing things, and the prices are always increasing." The Accio Work study confirms this is a common issue, with roughly one in ten business owners citing unreliable suppliers among their most difficult responsibilities.

Expansion Plans and Future Vision

The remarkable success of Walkmisu has enabled Benedettini to consider franchising his operation and expanding his brand. Having worked in hospitality since his early career in Italy before relocating to London in 2016, he had long harbored ambitions of running his own venture.

"No one was selling just tiramisu at the time," Benedettini recalled of his initial concept. "And most places were selling it with alcohol, whereas the original recipe is alcohol free."

A spokesperson for Accio Work commented on Benedettini's achievement: "Daniele's business has flourished in such a short time, attracting customers locally and more widely thanks to Walkmisu's online presence. Clearly, he is a very talented entrepreneur and has worked incredibly hard to make his company such a success. And it's great to see AI has already played a part in this."

The transformation of a London landmark into a thriving food business demonstrates how innovative thinking, cultural fusion, and modern technology can create unexpected success stories in the competitive world of small business entrepreneurship.
