A Chinese startup has introduced an innovative device that claims to decode the meaning behind your dog's barks and other pet vocalizations with remarkable precision. The company, Meng Xiaoyi, has unveiled PettiChat, an artificial intelligence-powered collar attachment that it says can translate animal sounds into human language with up to 95 percent accuracy.
According to the company, the device has already generated significant interest, with reports indicating that around 10,000 units have been reserved since pre-orders opened earlier this month. The collar, which attaches to a standard pet collar, promises real-time translation in just 1.2 seconds.
How PettiChat Works
The company claims that its AI translator was built on millions of voiceprint data points collected from pets, enabling it to recognize vocalizations, emotions, and behavioral language. Examples of translated phrases provided by Meng Xiaoyi include 'Leave me alone, you're bothering me,' 'I want those treats,' and 'Pay attention to me.' The device also claims to translate human words into sounds that pets can understand.
Priced at £114 on the company's website, the collar requires an annual subscription to a companion app. It is waterproof and can be switched off when not in use to address privacy concerns. Additionally, it maintains a chat history with your pet and tracks their movements, sending alerts if the animal wanders too far.
Skepticism and Doubts
Despite the bold claims, some observers have expressed skepticism, noting that no published data supports the device's accuracy. Social media users have questioned how the 95 percent accuracy was verified, with one person on X writing, 'I wonder how they proved the accuracy.' Another joked, '95 percent accuracy means one in 20 translations is just made up. Your cat says "feed me" and the collar goes "I've been contemplating the void."'
Videos shared online appear to show the device working, with dogs demanding playtime and cats asking for treats. However, critics remain unconvinced. The Daily Mail has contacted Meng Xiaoyi for further information regarding the accuracy claims.
Company Vision
PettiChat was founded by a multidisciplinary team of AI engineers, animal behavior scientists, veterinarians, and pet lovers. The company's website states, 'By combining scientific research with advanced AI, PettiChat is pioneering a new era of interspecies communication – deepening the bond between humans and their pets.' The company emphasizes that the device is designed to support awareness and care, not replace the owner's judgment or bond with their pet.
Experts have previously suggested that AI could enable communication with animals, such as dolphins. Google's DeepMind has developed DolphinGemma, an AI model trained on dolphin sounds, aiming to uncover patterns in their communication.
