An American woman living in the UK has left Brits horrified after making a ‘vile’ mistake while trying crumpets for the first time. The bakery staple, considered one of the most quintessentially British foods, is typically enjoyed toasted with butter, jam, or cheese. However, Sarah, who posts online as The Cheeky American, decided to sample a crumpet straight from the packet without toasting it—a decision that sparked outrage among social media users.
The Crumpet Experiment
Sarah regularly films herself trying British foods from her car. In a recent TikTok video, she revealed that her daughter’s nursery teacher had suggested she try Warburton’s crumpets. Despite being told that crumpets are traditionally served toasted, she announced she would try one untoasted. She explained: “I’m trying the first one, which I put in the toaster, which I know is the correct way. This one, I’ve just taken out of the packaging and put butter on. You never know, I might like the one that’s not toasted.”
After taking a bite of the toasted crumpet, Sarah declared it “delicious” and awarded it a perfect 10 out of 10. However, when she tried the untoasted version, she grimaced in revulsion, rating it only 2 out of 10. She noted: “This is not it. Toasting it makes a huge difference. This is incredible. The fact that I just heated this up and it tastes completely different? Amazing.”
Public Reaction
Viewers were left bewildered by Sarah’s willingness to attempt an untoasted crumpet. Many insisted they believed no one had ever tried such a thing before. One person commented: “First time in history a crumpet has been eaten untoasted.” Another added: “You CANNOT eat an untoasted crumpet.” A third wrote: “The untoasted crumpet made me physically recoil.”
Is It Safe to Eat Crumpets Without Toasting?
For most Brits, toasting a crumpet is automatic, but is it safe to eat them raw? Crumpets are pre-cooked during manufacture, making them perfectly safe to consume even without toasting. However, the texture of an untoasted crumpet is often described as soft and doughy, and butter does not soak into the holes as it does when the crumpet is hot. If you prefer the squidgy texture, you can enjoy them straight from the packet, or microwave them for a few seconds to warm them without browning.
