Barclaycard to Shut Down Website, Pushing Customers to App
Barclaycard to Close Website, Push Customers to App

Barclaycard is set to close its dedicated website on June 10, 2026, with customers being directed to use the Barclaycard app for account management. The move, announced by parent company Barclays, is attributed to the growing preference among users for mobile banking.

Website Closure Details

According to an email sent to customers and shared on Reddit, the online servicing portal for Barclaycard will be discontinued. The message reassures users that their accounts and card usage will remain unaffected, stating: "Your Barclaycard online servicing is closing on 10 June 2026. We understand that a change like this can be unexpected, but this won't affect your account or how you use your card in any way. Please keep using the Barclaycard app to manage your account."

Barclays explained that the decision stems from a shift in customer behaviour, with an increasing number of people choosing to bank through the app. A spokesperson commented: "Following a review, we will be simplifying things for customers by replacing the dedicated Barclaycard website with account servicing via Barclays online banking. This change will be implemented gradually and with no loss of access to online banking for those who use it regularly."

Customer Reactions

The announcement has sparked frustration among some customers, who took to social media to voice their concerns. One user remarked: "They're closing banks, and now they're closing websites. Not everyone uses apps." Others echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the digital divide and the needs of less tech-savvy individuals.

Barclays, however, maintains that customers will still have alternative channels to manage their accounts. The spokesperson added: "Throughout, customers will still be able to apply for a new card or administer their existing account as usual via the Barclaycard or Barclays apps, telephone banking, or in branch."

Broader Context: Branch Strategy

This development comes amid reports that Barclays is planning a return to the high street. Earlier this month, The Times reported that the bank intends to open new branches and reintroduce "bank managers." Vim Maru, chief executive officer at Barclays UK, told the newspaper: "What we're trying to do is something that allows us to differentiate in front of our customers. Of course we're going to be great in digital – but we're going to be there for you when you need some help and support. You're not going to be stuck in some chatbot trying to get out of the loop and trying to speak to someone."

Since 2018, Barclays has closed over 800 branches, leaving 206 operational across the UK. Maru emphasised the return of the branch manager, stating: "The branch manager or bank manager is back. Most customers come in and they want to talk to the bank manager from time to time."

Barclaycard, which holds over five million customer accounts in the UK, will continue to offer its services through the Barclays website for online banking, though the dedicated Barclaycard site will be phased out.
