BMW iX3 Crowned 2026 World Car of the Year in Prestigious Awards Ceremony
The all-electric BMW iX3 has been named the 2026 World Car of the Year, securing the top honour at a ceremony held during the New York International Auto Show. This victory marks a significant milestone for BMW, ending a four-year dominance of the award by Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai.
British-Built Nissan Leaf Claims Runner-Up Position
In second place, the Nissan Leaf, manufactured at Nissan's Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom, demonstrated the ongoing strength of British automotive production. The iX3's win represents the eighth time in seven years that an all-electric vehicle has claimed the World Car of the Year title, underscoring the accelerating shift towards electrification in the global automotive industry.
Hyundai, Mazda, Lucid and Firefly Among Other Winners
The awards ceremony celebrated multiple manufacturers across various categories. Hyundai's Ioniq 6 N, an all-electric sports car, was named the 2026 World Performance Car. Meanwhile, the new Mazda 6e received the 2026 World Car Design of the Year award.
Two brands poised for UK market entry also achieved recognition. The Firefly, a new brand from Chinese car maker Nio, won the 2026 World Urban Car award and is expected to launch in the UK later this year. Additionally, the Lucid Gravity secured the 2026 World Luxury Car award, with Lucid planning to introduce its smaller Cosmos model to the UK market in the coming years.
BMW's Sweep of Awards and Executive Recognition
Beyond the overall victory, the BMW iX3 was also named the 2026 World Electric Car. Outgoing BMW CEO Oliver Zipse was honoured with the 2026 World Car Person of the Year trophy, highlighting his leadership during this transformative period for the company.
Mike Reichelt, head of BMW's Neue Klasse project, accepted the award in New York, stating: "We are delighted by this outstanding result for the BMW iX3, the first production model of the Neue Klasse. The iX3 marks the beginning of a new era for BMW in terms of design language, range and charging performance, driver assistance systems, and the user experience with the first-ever BMW Panoramic iDrive."
He added: "Above all, the iX3 stands for the next generation of sheer driving pleasure, powered by the Heart of Joy. With 40 new or updated models coming in the next year, the innovations of the Neue Klasse will benefit our entire product portfolio."
