BYD is set to revolutionise the supermini market with the introduction of the Dolphin G DM-i, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback that promises to offer an affordable entry into electric driving without the anxiety of charging infrastructure. This new model is expected to become the UK's cheapest plug-in hybrid vehicle, bridging the gap between pure electric and traditional petrol cars.
Positioning and Pricing
The Dolphin G DM-i will sit alongside the fully electric BYD Dolphin Surf, which currently retails between £18,675 and £23,975, and below the larger Atto 2 DM-i SUV, priced from £26,995. While BYD has yet to announce official pricing, industry analysts anticipate a starting figure around £23,000, making it a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers seeking hybrid technology.
Plug-In Hybrid Technology
Unlike the all-electric Dolphin Surf, the Dolphin G DM-i combines an electric motor with a petrol engine and a rechargeable battery. This setup allows for daily commutes on electric power alone, while the petrol engine provides backup for longer journeys. BYD claims the car can achieve over 621 miles on a full battery and a full tank of petrol, surpassing the Atto 2 DM-i's combined range of 577 miles. The Atto 2 features a 7.8kWh battery and a 1.5-litre petrol engine, offering up to 31 miles of electric-only range. The Dolphin G is expected to use similar but optimised technology for greater efficiency.
Dimensions and Practicality
Measuring 4,160mm in length and 1,825mm in width, the Dolphin G competes directly with popular superminis like the Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris, and Vauxhall Corsa. BYD promises family-car levels of practicality, though detailed boot space and interior dimensions will be revealed closer to the launch date.
Designed for Europe
The Dolphin G DM-i marks a strategic shift for BYD as it is the first model developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe, rather than being adapted from an existing Chinese domestic model. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li stated: "The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with Dolphin G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era. By bringing long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features into an accessible compact vehicle, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe."
Launch Timeline
BYD plans to fully unveil the Dolphin G DM-i in June 2026, with first customer deliveries expected towards the end of summer or early autumn. UK pricing, trim levels, and full technical specifications will be announced nearer the launch date.
