Panic briefly gripped Gatwick Airport today as multiple fire engines descended on the North Terminal following an emergency alert. Eyewitnesses reported seeing crews in breathing apparatus entering the building as passengers were moved to safety.
The incident, which occurred around midday, caused significant disruption to travel plans with several flights delayed while authorities conducted safety checks. Airport staff could be seen directing confused travellers away from the affected area as the alarm sounded throughout the terminal.
Emergency Response
Firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene within minutes of the alert being raised. Video footage showed at least six fire appliances with flashing blue lights stationed outside the terminal building.
"We received multiple calls reporting smoke in the baggage handling area," a fire service spokesperson confirmed. "Crews conducted a thorough search but found no evidence of an actual fire. The incident was declared a false alarm."
Passenger Experience
Travellers described chaotic scenes as the emergency unfolded. "Suddenly there were staff shouting for everyone to move away from check-in desks," said holidaymaker Sarah Jennings, 34, from Brighton. "People were looking around nervously - you could smell the tension."
While the terminal wasn't fully evacuated, several departure gates were temporarily closed as a precaution. Airport officials confirmed that operations were returning to normal within two hours, though some passengers reported missing their flights due to the disruption.
