Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has issued a critical safety warning to owners of its I-PACE electric vehicles, highlighting a potential fire hazard linked to battery thermal overload. This alert impacts more than 26,000 vehicles in the United Kingdom, specifically those manufactured up to the conclusion of the 2021 model year.
Safety Precautions and Interim Measures
In response to the identified risk, JLR is advising affected owners to park their vehicles away from buildings and to charge them exclusively outdoors to mitigate any danger. An interim repair has been made available, which involves a software update that restricts the car's maximum charge capacity to 90 per cent. However, this solution is temporary, and the absence of a permanent fix has sparked considerable anxiety among vehicle owners.
Owner Concerns and Insurance Implications
Owners have voiced profound safety fears, with some reporting extreme caution in using their cars. For instance, one fire safety engineer has stated he refuses to allow his grandchildren to ride in his I-PACE due to the perceived risks. Additionally, concerns have been raised about insurance coverage, as at least one owner reported that their insurer would not provide protection for damages resulting from battery fires, further exacerbating worries about vehicle devaluation and financial liability.
Recall and Regulatory Oversight
JLR has initiated a voluntary recall for the affected I-PACE models, offering the software update at no cost to owners. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is actively monitoring the situation to ensure compliance and safety standards are upheld.
