Jet2 Issues Half-Term Travel Update on Fuel Supply

Jet2 has issued a half-term travel update, reassuring passengers that it has sufficient jet fuel supplies despite ongoing concerns over the US-Iran conflict. The airline reported its busiest weekend on record, with unprecedented numbers of travellers departing from UK airports for the May half-term break.

Record-Breaking Weekend

In a statement released on Wednesday, May 27, Jet2 confirmed that it had experienced its busiest weekend ever, with hundreds of thousands of passengers flying to popular destinations. The most sought-after locations included the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Turkey, mainland Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Croatia, and Bulgaria.

The airline is gearing up for a hectic summer season, operating a fleet of 139 aircraft from 14 UK airports to destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, and North Africa.

CEO's Assurance

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, commented: "This weekend saw us operate a record-breaking weekend, as customers took advantage of the bank holiday weekend and May half-term and took off to the sunshine. Given the number of customers who travelled with us over the weekend, it is very clear how much people want to get away and enjoy their well-deserved holidays."

He added: "Everything is geared up and ready for a busy summer and our message to holidaymakers is that summer is very much on. We have always been very clear about our plans to operate as normal this summer, and the busy weekend shows just how eager customers are to get away."

Fuel Supply Concerns

The update follows growing worries about the impact of the US-Iran war on jet fuel supplies. Jet2 and Ryanair have maintained that there will be no immediate disruption. Jet2's CEO noted that the firm had received encouraging updates from fuel suppliers, who confirmed increased production and extra imports of jet fuel.

Just last week, Jet2 topped a UK resilience ranking as the best protected airline against elevated fuel costs. Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary echoed similar views, stating he had "no issues over jet fuel supply right now through to the end of September." However, he expressed concern about oil prices due to ongoing disruption at the Strait of Hormuz, warning that this could lead to "airlines failing all over Europe." Ryanair announced on Monday that future profits would likely be affected.
