Tesco Unveils AI Assistant Trial to Transform Customer Meal Planning
Supermarket giant Tesco has initiated a groundbreaking trial of an innovative AI assistant, designed to fundamentally reshape how customers approach meal planning and grocery management. This ambitious project represents a significant leap forward in retail technology, with the potential to streamline daily household tasks for millions of shoppers across the United Kingdom.
Internal Testing Phase with Extensive Employee Feedback
In a strategic move to ensure optimal performance, Tesco has granted early access to approximately 280,000 employees who will rigorously test the new AI tool over the coming weeks. These colleagues will provide essential feedback and even contribute to naming the assistant before its anticipated public launch later this year. This internal testing phase is considered crucial for refining the technology and ironing out any potential issues prior to widespread customer deployment.
The AI assistant is directly linked to employees' Clubcard purchase data, enabling it to make intelligent suggestions based on individual shopping histories. This integration allows the system to recommend recipes using ingredients that customers likely already have in their cupboards or refrigerators, potentially reducing food waste and unnecessary purchases.
Advanced Features for Personalised Meal Inspiration
Tesco's new AI assistant promises to simplify meal planning through natural, two-way dialogue that offers personalised recipe ideas tailored to individual dietary preferences and restrictions. Users will be able to search for meals based on specific criteria such as cost, cuisine type, or available ingredients, creating a highly customised cooking experience.
The assistant will be seamlessly integrated into the existing Tesco app, forming part of a broader long-term strategy to expand the application's functionality beyond traditional shopping. The ultimate goal is to assist customers with more aspects of their daily lives, providing what Tesco describes as a "genuinely intelligent, helpful shopping experience" that extends well beyond the supermarket aisle.
Collaborative Development with AI Specialists
The supermarket revealed that its in-house technology teams have been collaborating with Tomoro AI, a UK-based consultancy founded in 2023 in alliance with OpenAI, on the assistant's development. This partnership has operated under "strict secrecy protocols" since last autumn, highlighting the competitive nature of AI innovation in the retail sector.
Tesco has emphasised that artificial intelligence has been operating "behind the scenes" of its operations for years, particularly within its Clubcard loyalty programme, to continuously improve the overall shopping experience. The retailer has doubled its technology team over the past five years and recently partnered with European AI start-up Mistral to further enhance its AI capabilities, demonstrating a sustained commitment to technological advancement.
