Toyota Issues Urgent Safety Recall for HiLux Utes Over Power Steering Defect
Toyota has initiated a critical safety recall affecting more than 13,000 HiLux utility vehicles due to a serious technical fault that could lead to a sudden loss of power steering assistance. This defect poses a significant risk of accidents, with potential consequences including serious injury or death.
Scope and Details of the Recall
The recall specifically targets 13,390 Toyota HiLux models from the 2025-2026 production years. The issue is confined to vehicles that have been fitted with a Toyota Genuine bull bar or nudge bar in combination with a light bar accessory. According to the manufacturer, the problem stems from an installation error in the electric power steering (EPS) system, rather than a factory wiring fault.
Technical specialists have identified that during the accessory fitting process, a ground (earth) terminal was incorrectly positioned. This misalignment can result in an unexpected and immediate loss of power steering assistance while the vehicle is in motion, making steering considerably heavier and more difficult to control.
Safety Risks and Vehicle Models Affected
Toyota has emphasized that there are no warning lights or prior indicators before the power steering assistance fails, which significantly increases the danger. A recall notice explicitly warned that this defect elevates the risk of a crash, with the potential for severe injuries or fatalities.
The affected vehicles were manufactured between August 28, 2025, and February 24, 2026. The recall encompasses both 4x2 and 4x4 variants across multiple grades, including:
- WorkMate
- SR
- SR5
- Rogue
- Rugged X
Response and Repair Process
Toyota is proactively contacting owners of the affected HiLux utes directly. Owners are being urged to schedule an appointment at an authorized Toyota dealership for a thorough inspection. Certified technicians will examine the electric power steering system and correct the ground terminal positioning if necessary.
Importantly, all repairs will be conducted free of charge, with no cost to the vehicle owners. This recall follows another recent safety action by Toyota, where over 11,000 LandCruiser 300 four-wheel drives were recalled last month due to a transmission fault, highlighting ongoing quality control challenges in the automotive industry.
Vehicle owners are advised to respond promptly to Toyota's communications to ensure their safety and compliance with the recall requirements.
