After months of delays, Valve has finally announced the release date and price for its upcoming Steam Controller. Gamers can purchase the device from 6pm BST on May 4, 2026, at a retail price of £85.
Long-Awaited Release
Valve initially unveiled the Steam Controller in November last year, alongside its Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset. However, the latter two products remain delayed due to the ongoing RAM crisis. Fortunately, the controller does not require RAM to operate, allowing it to reach the market ahead of its counterparts.
Design and Features
The Steam Controller is designed primarily for PC gaming, featuring two track pads beneath the joysticks that emulate a mouse. This design is reminiscent of the controls found on the Steam Deck.
Key features include TMR-enabled thumbsticks, which use magnets to measure movement instead of traditional potentiometers. This technology aims to eliminate stick drift over time. On the back, four paddle buttons are within easy reach, along with grip sensors in the handles that can be mapped as inputs or used to enable gyroscope aiming.
While the controller lacks haptic triggers like those on the DualSense, early reviews report strong rumble motors. Valve advertises a 35-hour battery life, supported by an elegant charging solution: a dongle that doubles as a charging puck, effectively acting as a docking station.
Connectivity and Customisation
The Steam Controller works best via Steam on a PC but also includes Bluetooth for connecting to other compatible devices. Full customisation is available through Steam, where every button can be remapped. Thanks to millions of Steam Deck gamers, countless custom controller profiles are already available for free download from the store.
