Plans for an £8 million holiday park in the tranquil North Yorkshire village of Kirkby Fleetham have ignited a fierce local debate. The proposal, submitted by the Fat Badger Group, envisions 24 lodges, 11 holiday lets, a farm shop, a spa, two padel courts, and a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing village pub.
Community Concerns
The development has drawn 72 formal objections from residents, who argue that the project would overwhelm the small village of approximately 500 people. Key worries include the scale of the development, its impact on the village's character, increased noise and light pollution, highway safety risks, potential flooding, inadequate sewage capacity, and loss of wildlife habitats.
Support for the Project
However, 26 comments in favour of the application have also been submitted. Supporters view the scheme as a significant investment that could boost the local economy, create jobs, and enhance the area's amenities. The Fat Badger Group has emphasised the benefits of the farm shop and improved pub facilities.

A decision on planning permission is expected by the determination deadline of 2 June. The local planning authority will weigh the substantial opposition against the potential economic gains before reaching a verdict.
