An abandoned Pontins Holiday Park in Southport, Merseyside, has been left to deteriorate, with its once-vibrant rides and colourful holiday flats now standing as empty, decaying shells. This site, which permanently closed on January 3, 2024, after 54 years of operation, is just one of many Pontins locations across the UK that have been deserted since the chain shut down numerous parks between late 2023 and early 2024.
The Decline of a Once-Popular Chain
Pontins, a holiday park operator that had been rated as the worst in the UK by Which? in 2022, entered into administration before being acquired by the Britannia Hotel Group on January 28, 2011, for an estimated £20 million. Despite this acquisition, the company continued to struggle, leading to the closure of dozens of its sites in recent years.
Eerie Explorations by Urban Adventurers
Urban explorer Adventurous Hiker has documented the haunting state of the Southport park, revealing scenes of abandonment that include rotting rides, empty buildings once packed with visitors, and crumbling structures with visible cracks. The exploration highlights how once-bustling ice cream shops and playgrounds, where children once played, are now silent and overrun with heaps of rubbish and piles of junk.
The legacy of Pontins, once a beloved institution for family holidays, is now evident in the filth and decay left behind at its many locations. These abandoned parks, devoid of any signs of life, serve as a stark reminder of the chain's fall from grace, with private beaches, swimming pools, and other amenities now lying neglected and forgotten.
