Bournemouth Pier Abolishes Entry Fee Indefinitely After Visitor Surge

Bournemouth Pier has officially scrapped its entrance fee indefinitely, a decision driven by a notable increase in visitor numbers at the iconic seaside attraction. This move follows a successful year-long suspension of the toll, which was initially implemented in 2025 to improve access amid rising living costs.

Historic Pier Embraces Free Access

The 145-year-old pier, renowned for its fun fair rides, zip wires, and restaurants, will remain free as part of a substantial £700,000 investment aimed at securing its future. Adventure Attractions, the operator of the pier, reported a strong uplift in visitor numbers over the past year, prompting the decision to remove the entry fee for at least three years, with plans to extend this indefinitely.

Sarah Hunter, the managing director of Adventure Attractions, stated: "Increasing accessibility to the pier has always been our ambition, and the response over the past year has been incredibly positive. Continuing the toll suspension allows us to build on that momentum and ensure the pier remains a place everyone can enjoy, all year round."

Investment and Economic Impact

The £700,000 investment represents the revenue that would have been generated if the toll were still in place. Ms Hunter acknowledged this as a "huge investment and risk for us," but highlighted that the rising visitor numbers and positive impact on local businesses demonstrate the risk is worthwhile.

In contrast, other popular piers such as the Palace Pier in Brighton and Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare continue to charge admission fees, making Bournemouth Pier's free access a standout initiative in the region.

Council Support and Community Benefits

Amanda Barrie, commercial operations director at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, emphasized the broader benefits: "Bournemouth Pier is one of our most loved landmarks and keeping it open and accessible benefits both residents and visitors alike. We are pleased to be able to work with Adventure Attractions to allow residents and visitors to enjoy the pier toll-free, which helps encourage footfall, supports tourism, and strengthens the local economy, while ensuring the pier remains a welcoming, everyday space for our communities."

This strategic shift not only enhances the pier's appeal but also aligns with efforts to boost tourism and economic vitality in the area, setting a precedent for other attractions to consider similar measures.
