Canadian Tourist Dies on Thailand's Tiger Cave Temple Staircase After Dizziness
A Canadian tourist has tragically died while attempting to climb the famous 1,260-step staircase at the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, Thailand. The man collapsed near the 1,100th step on 29 March, according to local officials.
Details of the Incident
The tourist was ascending the steep staircase alongside his 61-year-old Thai wife when he suddenly fell unconscious. His identity has not been immediately released to the public. Emergency responders from the Krabi Phithak Pracha Foundation rushed to the scene after the man was discovered lying on the steps.
Bystanders reportedly attempted to revive the Canadian tourist before paramedics arrived, but rescue personnel confirmed he had no pulse and could not be resuscitated. His body was subsequently transported down the challenging and steep steps of the temple.
Wife's Account and Previous Climbing Experience
According to police statements, the man's wife informed authorities that her husband had complained of feeling dizzy shortly before collapsing. She explained that the couple were visiting Krabi and intended to pay their respects at the Buddha statues located at the hilltop shrine.
The wife also noted that they had undertaken similar climbs in the past, suggesting this was not their first experience with demanding ascents. The Tiger Cave Temple, also known as Wat Tham Suea, is renowned as one of Thailand's most prominent religious sites, offering stunning panoramic views of the island from its summit.
Growing Safety Concerns and Recent Fatalities
This tragic incident occurred just three days after a 68-year-old Thai man collapsed and died at the summit of the same temple. The demanding 1,260-step ascent is especially taxing during hot weather conditions, raising concerns about visitor safety.
Following the Canadian tourist's death, many Thai social media users have urged authorities to implement stricter safety precautions at the temple. Proposals include installing a cable car system, limiting access for older visitors, and introducing mandatory health screenings for those attempting the climb.
History of Accidents on the Staircase
There is growing alarm over repeated accidents and medical emergencies on the Tiger Cave Temple staircase. In March 2023, a 70-year-old Australian tourist died after completing the climb. Earlier that same year, in January 2023, a 19-year-old German tourist was injured after fainting and falling near the summit.
These incidents highlight the physical challenges posed by the ascent, particularly for tourists who may be unaccustomed to the combination of steep steps and tropical heat. The temple remains a popular attraction despite these risks, drawing visitors seeking spiritual fulfilment and breathtaking views.
