With the May half-term approaching and summer on the horizon, Brits are already planning their next getaway. Just a few hours' flight away lies a destination that has been crowned Europe's sunniest place, according to TUI. New research analysing weather data from over 150 destinations across the continent highlights this peninsula as an ideal, rain-proof family holiday spot.
Gibraltar: A Sunny Haven
Gibraltar records the lowest rainfall during the summer holidays, averaging just 0.05 mm. Mean summer temperatures hover around 24°C, thanks to warm Mediterranean breezes. As a fully English-speaking territory, Gibraltar offers blue skies, balmy days, and a wealth of unique attractions, natural wonders, and family-friendly adventures.
The Rock of Gibraltar
The main feature of its landscape is also its main attraction: the Rock of Gibraltar, the iconic geological formation that towers over the city. Visitors can reach the top via cable car or taxi tour, then explore the area, home to Europe's only wild monkeys—the Barbary macaques. These playful primates are a guaranteed hit with children and adults alike.
Also worth exploring is St. Michael's Cave, a natural limestone cavern adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, naturally illuminated and used for concerts and events. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Great Siege Tunnels and WWII Tunnels, passageways carved out for defence in the 18th and 20th centuries.
Outdoor Activities
Hikers can enjoy the Mediterranean Steps, a coastal-view track featuring the Skywalk, a tall glass platform perfect for photos. For beach lovers, head to Gibraltar's southernmost tip, Europa Point, for views of the local lighthouse and even Morocco across the sea. Families can also take boat tours to see pods of wild dolphins leaping in the waters.
Shopping and Dining
Back in the city, tourists of all ages can enjoy VAT-free shopping for electronics and designer fashion. Local pubs and restaurants line Main Street and Casemates Square, offering hearty meals and refreshments.
Easy Access
Getting to Gibraltar is straightforward: direct flights from London, Manchester, and other major UK airports take under three hours, with fares as low as £57 in the off-season and around £100 in summer. Spring and autumn also offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower flight prices.
Gibraltar feels like a slice of Britain abroad, with familiar brands like Morrisons, Costa Coffee, and Card Factory. Locals use the British pound and hold UK passports, despite being closer to Morocco than Manchester.
Social Media Buzz
Meg Leigh, a Yorkshire native turned Gibraltarian, has been documenting her sun-kissed life on TikTok for four years. In a viral video, she says, "I wouldn't move back to the UK. Four years on and I own my house, have a job for life and a better quality of life." She cautions that Gibraltar can be "super expensive" and recommends securing a job before relocating.
Another popular TikToker, Hannah (@lidbetterlidbetter) from southern England, has garnered millions of views with snippets of her daily life in Gibraltar. "It's like the UK but actually in the sun," she joked in one video, showcasing marching bands, red phone boxes, familiar high street brands, sandy beaches, dolphin-watching excursions, and the notorious monkeys.
