Father and Son's Epic 400-Day Global Cycling Adventure Nears Its End
It is not every day that a family embarks on a journey to cycle around the world, but for father and son George and Josh Kohler, this has been their reality for more than a year. Hailing from Norfolk, the duo has been pedalling across the globe on an extraordinary mission they call 'Pedal the Planet'.
A Journey of Endurance and Charity
George, aged 57, and his son Josh, 23, set off from their hometown on 29 March last year. Since then, they have traversed more than 25 countries, experiencing diverse landscapes from barren deserts to rugged mountains and terraced rice fields. By the time they conclude their remarkable journey next month, they will have spent almost 400 days on the road, covering an expected 30,000 kilometres and ascending a staggering 180,000 metres—equivalent to climbing Mount Everest 20 times.
In addition to their physical feats, the pair have raised over £30,000 for charity, supporting organisations like UNICEF and Bicycle Links, a Norwich-based bike company that provides refurbished bicycles and mental health support through workshops.
Record-Breaking Ambitions
As they approach the finish line, George and Josh are on track to secure three Guinness World Records titles: 'Fastest father and son to circumnavigate the world on bicycles', 'Furthest distance cycled by a father and son', and 'Most countries cycled through by a father and son'. With just weeks remaining, they recently completed the South America leg of their journey and are now cycling through Portugal, Spain, and France before returning to Norfolk on 2 May.
Surprise Favourite: China
Amid the gruelling challenges, one destination stood out as their favourite—China. Josh, a videographer and content creator, explained, "We didn't want to leave. We spent two months cycling through there. We arrived with no expectations, but when we got there, it was completely different to what we had expected. It was incredible." He highlighted the vibrant culture, delicious food, stunning scenery, and friendly people.
George added, "Little snippets from China include being able to walk on the western side of the Great Wall in this incredible scenery, to witnessing the Hani rice terraces, the largest in the world—it was like overlooking the Grand Canyon but made of rice, it was just insane."
Challenges Along the Way
However, the journey has not been without its hardships. The duo faced punishing headwinds, scorching desert heat, gruelling mountain passes, and isolated roads. They both agreed that Brazil posed the biggest challenge due to its "very hilly" terrain. Josh noted that South America as a whole was demanding, with a lack of cycling infrastructure forcing them onto highways shared with trucks, especially in Argentina, where temperatures reached 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.
George also pointed to Australia as one of the most taxing parts, citing the vast, treeless deserts that seemed to go on forever. "Until you've experienced it, it's just a figure on a map," he said, describing the 12,000-kilometre stretch with minimal amenities.
Emotional Reflections and Relationship Growth
As the end of their adventure looms, both George and Josh confess to feeling emotional. Josh reflected, "This has been our way of life for the last year, and there will be a lot of changes happening." He added that the journey tested their relationship, leading to occasional clashes but ultimately strengthening their bond. "The bonds we've formed and strengthened have just made this whole thing incredible," he said.
George echoed these sentiments, emphasising the mutual support and respect that helped them overcome hardships. "The amazing people we've met, the incredible journey we've gone through, the fantastic scenery, and the whole thing has been so awesome to be a part of," he shared.
Looking Ahead
With the final leg underway, the father-and-son team are poised to complete their epic 400-day venture, leaving behind a legacy of charity, record-breaking achievements, and unforgettable memories. Their story serves as an inspiration for adventurers and families alike, proving that with determination and teamwork, even the most daunting challenges can be conquered.
