Flatpack Champion Retains Title with Eight-Minute Bedside Table Build
Flatpack Champion Retains Title in Eight-Minute Build

The reigning flatpack world champion has successfully defended her title after assembling a bedside table in under nine minutes at the opening of Grand Designs Live at Excel London on Friday.

A Stellar Performance

Seven flatpack assembly experts from across the country competed to build furniture as quickly and accurately as possible. Hayley McAuley, from Wigan, retained her Flatpack World Championships crown from 2025 by beating her own record of nine minutes and 33 seconds, completing the bedside table in just eight minutes and 20 seconds.

Winner's Reaction

Ms McAuley, who runs her own flatpack assembly service in Wigan, expressed her disbelief and pride. “I can’t quite believe I’ve done it again,” she said. “The competition was tough this year and everyone brought their A-game, so I’m really proud to have held on to the title. It’s such a fun event to be part of and the atmosphere was amazing.” She took home a golden Allen key medal as her prize.

Judge's Praise

Kunle Barker, presenter of Grand Designs Live, praised McAuley’s dominance. “Honestly, wow. Hayley’s just in a league of her own. She had some proper competition this year, but to come back and win it again is seriously impressive. Two in a row is no joke. You do start to wonder… is anyone actually going to take that crown off her?” he remarked.

Charity Donation

Organisers confirmed that the completed furniture would be donated to the British Heart Foundation, adding a charitable element to the competition.
