After twenty-seven years of operation, a beloved Florida racing-themed amusement park is closing its gates for the final time. The Andretti Thrill Park in Melbourne, Florida, which first opened in 1999, is now facing demolition, with crews ready to tear down the aging facility.
The End of an Era for Family Entertainment
The park served as the founding location for the national Andretti brand and was a longtime favorite destination for weekend outings, birthday celebrations, and family gatherings. Its diverse attractions included multiple go-kart tracks, miniature golf courses, laser tag arenas, paddle boats, climbing walls, and a large video arcade.
Owner Cites Aging Infrastructure, Not Finances
Owner Eddie Hamann clarified that the decision to shutter the 27-year-old park was based solely on the aging facility's condition rather than any financial difficulties. "There was no issue with the city, no issue with the county. Sales were still strong. We never lost money here," Hamann told The Space Coast Rocket. "It's simply that the facility is 27 years old. It requires a lot of maintenance, and it was time to look at what the future holds."
Redevelopment Plans for the Property
The 16.7-acre property is slated for significant redevelopment. According to a proposal from the NRP Group reported by People, the site will be transformed into 324 apartment units spread across 11 three-story buildings. Construction is expected to commence in May 2026, with completion targeted for March 2028.
Hamann noted that the new development will likely cater to students from the Florida Institute of Technology and local workers. Demolition is set to begin within the next three to four weeks, with construction following shortly thereafter. "With how quickly Melbourne and Palm Bay are growing, housing is one of the biggest needs right now," he explained, adding, "I've shed my tears. Now it's time to move forward."
Andretti Brand Continues Elsewhere
Although the Melbourne location is closing, the Andretti brand remains active across the United States. The company continues to operate 15 Andretti Karting & Games centers, including a flagship location in Orlando. These venues are spread across multiple states, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Legacy of Co-Founder John Andretti
The park was co-founded by the late John Andretti, a member of the renowned Andretti racing family and a veteran competitor in NASCAR, CART, and IMSA. Andretti passed away in 2020 after a battle with colorectal cancer. In honor of his legacy, the company supports efforts to increase access to colonoscopy screenings for individuals who might otherwise be unable to afford them, continuing his commitment to health awareness.
