Exclusive Insights from Global Mermaids
The Daily Mail has spoken exclusively with three dedicated mermaids to explore this mystical world, their preferred aquatic havens, and the inherent dangers of swimming with a tail.
Patris Angel, known as Mermaid Starlight Seraika, resides in Greater Manchester but originates from France. A singer, event organiser, and life coach, her childhood fascination with mermaids fully blossomed in 2019 after discovering a website selling mermaid tails. She describes herself as "ageless, just like a mermaid" and emphasises crucial safety considerations.
"In the sea, the waves make it a little harder to stay under," Patris explains. "You really need to be careful to ensure it's deep enough. In a lake, you also must be cautious, especially if the bottom isn't sand but pebbles. However, it's often easier to find a regular water level." She notes that different bodies of water offer unique advantages; oceans allow mermaids to "rest in the waves" and drift shoreward. Patris also prefers a distinctive swimming style, keeping her hands down beside her body rather than extended forward.
Cora, based in Australia and known online as @siren_of_valhalla, works at events and shares her mermaid adventures on social media. She has invested thousands into her passion, obtaining professional mermaid qualifications, safety training, diving certificates, and an array of tails. Her most expensive tail cost $8,000 USD (approximately £6,000), though she advises beginners can find a safe monofin and tail for around $150 (£113).
"The monofin is the MOST important thing to keep you safe," Cora stresses. Tail maintenance requires significant effort and "lots of patience," with fabric tails needing gentle hand washes, while silicone and mythic varieties demand more meticulous care.
Cora discovered mermaiding after a severe horse-riding injury led to partial paralysis and chronic pain. "I started swimming with a monofin as part of physical therapy, and that's where I found my passion, love, and natural abilities for mermaiding," she shares. "The only time I am pain-free and fully abled is when in water, even with my heavy professional tails."
Marisa DeAngelis from Florida turned to mermaiding after finding corporate life unfulfilling. Beginning as a mermaid performer for events, she delighted in bringing happiness and "magic to everybody." Sharing her talent on social media, where she garnered millions of views, led to a "profound spiritual awakening" that reconnected her with her faith.
"I believe that this is a spiritual healing art," says Marisa, 30. She now operates adult mermaid retreats twice yearly in Florida, offering "immersive mermaid experiences" where guests learn tail swimming. The retreats, costing around $1,300 (£976) for five days, include creative workshops for mermaid-inspired accessories, yoga, guided meditation, and sound bowl healings. Guests also explore "ancient civilizations often associated with mermaid lore, like Atlantis and Lemuria."
Marisa describes the retreats as "a sacred space where women and men can express themselves and be celebrated." She believes "the mermaid is inside all of us" and that "you don't necessarily need the tail to embrace that mermaid spirit."
Favourite Global Mermaiding Locations
These experienced mermaids frequent diverse aquatic spots worldwide:
- Patris Angel cherishes memories of a private lake in Cheshire but now primarily swims at Salford Quays. She also favours Colwyn Bay in Wales and the sea in Venice.
- Marisa DeAngelis recommends Florida's West Coast for its "less wavy, more relaxed beaches with clearer water." She advises, "When you mermaid, you definitely want to go into more open water with people you trust for safety." Florida Springs is another preferred location due to its "completely crystal clear" water and controlled environment.
- Mermaid Cora enjoys spots near Melbourne and in Tasmania. However, her ultimate favourite is "a little spot in Fiji with turtles and dolphins, hundreds of beautiful fish, and deep water with some sharks."
This global phenomenon highlights how mermaiding transcends mere hobbyism, offering spiritual fulfilment, community, and a unique connection to the aquatic world.
